On-Board Cameras in UCI Road Racing

On-board cameras are the next big thing in cycling broadcasting. Personally I think this is a great move by the UCI. It brings the action from inside the race right to the viewer for an ‘in-race’ feel making the viewer feel more engaged. It also starts to catch up with other sports like Formula One Racing.

The latest on-bike footage comes from the UCI Elite Women’s Road Race 2014 in Spain where a gnarly crash and some action from inside the peloton are caught on camera. In addition, the riders had their bikes kitted out with sensors that transmit geolocation data in real time including position and speed. I think this technology will play a major role in cycling to moving forward. I also hope that these cameras will be introduced to track cycling soon, to give an inside view of the fast, furious racing in the velodrome.
